Concert Picks: Gold Motel, Old Californio, The Skirts…

We’ve got to tip our hats to the following bands who are swinging their instruments of choice and slinging their voices to the far reaches of the respective venue, mainly for providing us with choice concert picks despite the tendency of them being slim this time of year. Besides, the thought of staying in any [...]

Do Foo Fighters Know Robert Pattinson From Robert Plant?1665146

During band's rehearsal break for Sunday's Movie Awards, we put Foos to the test.

UNIVERSAL CITY, California — Hard rock, heavy metal, hardcore and punk have long gone hand-in-hand with evil wizards, magic, vampires and werewolves. And with a collective sub-cultural pedigree that includes stints in the Germs, No Use for a Name, Sunny Day Real Estate, Scream and some band called Nirvana, you'd think the Foo Fighters — set to perform at Sunday's Movie Awards — would know their "Potter" from their Zeppelin. Certainly they can recognize a "wand" reference and pinpoint its origin?

Right? Before we put MTV News' magically crafted trivia to the band, it seemed safe to assume the Foos would accurately distinguish between the words of Harry Potter, a "Twilight" character and Led Zeppelin. But was their underground nerd cred blown to shreds? Read on — and click the video! — to see how the Foo Fighters fared when we caught up with them on the Universal Studios lot, shortly after they finished rehearsing their Movie Awards performance. Our own Jim Cantiello played dungeon master as Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel, Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Pat Smear were given a series of semi-famous lines and asked whether they originated with "Harry Potter," the "Twilight Saga" or the lyrics of hard-rock pioneers Led Zeppelin. Here's a sampling of a few of those one-liners: » "The elder wand, the most powerful wand ever made." » "Why don't you let me be yours ever truly? Can I make your garden grow?" » "You're lying, Dolores! You mustn't tell lies!" Can you guess whether the lines above came from the "Potter" flicks, "Twilight" or Robert Plant? Watch as the Foos try their best to do exactly that. Then tune in to the MTV Movie Awards on Sunday to catch the Foo Fighters rock the stage with their new single, "Walk." Will wizards, vampires or dream thieves steal the 2011 MTV Movie Awards? Find out June 5, when the 20th annual show airs live at 9 p.m. ET/PT. Tune in at 7:30 p.m. ET/PT that night for the "America's Best Dance Crew" finale and Movie Awards pre-show, loaded with live action from the red carpet, exclusive movie clips and a special edition of "After Hours."

U2's 360 Tour is the year's most profitable in the U.S. and worldwide.
By James Montgomery

U2 didn't even release an album in 2011, but that didn't stop them from raking in plenty of cash. The iconic Irish quartet topped Pollstar's list of the year's most profitable tours, as their massive 360 Tour moved an impressive 2.4 million tickets worldwide, grossing more than $230 million globally. Their North American dates — which were postponed (and subsequently rescheduled) last year as Bono recovered from back surgery — made $156 million, good enough to give them the highest-grossing tour on this continent, too.

Taylor Swift had 2011's second most-profitable North American tour, as her expansive Speak Now jaunt racked up $97.7 million at the box office. Swift's country contemporary Kenny Chesney came in at #3, bringing in nearly $85 million in ticket sales, followed by Lady Gaga, who, despite wrapping up the North American leg of her Monster Ball Tour in April, still managed to bring in $63.7 million at the box office. Bon Jovi rounds out Pollstar's top five, grossing more than $57 million. Kanye West and Jay-Z's Throne tour ($48 million), Lil Wayne's "I Am Still Music" trek ($44 million), Britney Spears ($38 million) and Katy Perry ($28 million) also made the Top 25 in North America. British boy band Take That's reunion tour came in second to U2's 360 trek based on worldwide receipts, making $224 million. Bon Jovi grossed nearly $150 million worldwide, good enough for third, with tours by Swift ($104 million worldwide) and Roger Waters ($103 million) rounding out the top five. Also making Pollstar's worldwide list were Rihanna, the Foo Fighters, Justin Bieber, Usher and the Kings of Leon. Did you attend any of the highest-grossing tours in 2011? Let us know in the comments!

Adam Lambert's 'Whole Lotta Love': The Story Behind The Cover1610709

Glam rocker tackled the legendary 1970 Led Zeppelin song for 'American Idol' rock night.
By Gil Kaufman

Imagine a freight train speeding toward you at midnight. Or a rockslide barreling down a hill as you try to outrace it. That's the feeling of the ominous, chugging Jimmy Page riff that kicks off Led Zeppelin's 1970 Stonehenge of rock, "Whole Lotta Love." And that's before singer Robert Plant leans into one of the nastiest, ecstatic rock screams this side of the Who's "Won't Get Fooled Again." That's the song Adam Lambert chose to sing on "American Idol" rock night Tuesday (May 5), and, needless to say, it was a challenge that the eyeliner-loving Los Angeles stage veteran was more than up for, hitting a series of high notes and rock screams that would have made Plant proud. It was a risky maneuver that paid off for Lambert, who chose a tune that came in at #75 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" in 2004.

The legendary British rock act recorded the tribute to Chicago blues icon Willie Dixon during their second U.S. tour after working it out in their live show, including it on their 1969 classic album Led Zeppelin II. Like many of the songs Zeppelin performed early in their career, "Love" was a blues standard turned on its head with a heavy dose of crunching psychedelic guitar and thundering drums, courtesy of late drummer John Bonham. The song was based on a 1962 tune by another blues forefather, Muddy Waters, called "You Need Love," which was penned by Dixon. For Zeppelin's version, Plant customized the lyrics by adding some lyrical quotes from a few other songs Dixon wrote for Howlin' Wolf, "Back Door Man" and "Shake For Me," nailing the tricky vocal in a single take. It was also inspired by 1966's "You Need Loving" from the British rock group the Small Faces, for whom Zeppelin had great affection, but they also did not credit Dixon for his part in writing the original lyrics. The song became Zeppelin's first U.S. single and their only U.S. top 10 hit. Though their manager would not let them release singles in the U.K. because he thought it cannibalized album sales, the song was finally released as the band's only British single in 1997. Dixon sued Zeppelin over the song in 1985, claiming it borrowed too heavily from his "You Need Love," and Zeppelin reached an agreement with him, with Dixon using the money he received to set up a program that provided musical instruments for schools. A cornerstone of heavy rock, the tune -- which was the theme song for the long-running British countdown show "Top of the Pops" in the 1970s and '80s -- has been covered by dozens of artists over the years, from Tina Turner and Ben Harper to Prince, Slash, Leona Lewis, Train's Pat Monahan, the London Symphony Orchestra and Jane's Addiction. 'Prometheus' Trailer: Five Key Elements

Ridley Scott's teaser, featuring Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron fighting for their lives, is reminiscent of 'Alien' and 'Blade Runner.'
By Kara Warner

If you're a fan of movie trailers, consider your holiday wants and wishes fulfilled now that the teaser for Ridley Scott's "Prometheus" has dropped. It's the fourth trailer released this week for a hugely anticipated 2012 film, following "The Dark Knight Rises," "Wrath of the Titans" and "The Hobbit." Here's a look at five key elements that deserve MTV News' over-analysis:

Plot Tease
We still don't know a lot about the story line in this film, but this one-minute spot sheds a lot of light on what the action will center around: a team of explorers, scientists and anthropologists sets out on a journey to find clues to the origin of our species. "What they found could be our end," we're told in cold, blue type, before quick cuts of what looks to be death and destruction. And although the prequel rumors have been shot down by those involved, there is room here to interpret it as such. Not to mention the title: In Greek mythology, Prometheus is the titan who stole fire from Mt. Olympus and gave it to humans. If the humans in the film are searching for their origin, maybe it is Prometheus, in some way, shape or form.

Lost in Space/Discovery of Life on Other Planets
Unsurprisingly, there are several gorgeous shots of space vehicles, spaceships, spacesuits, etc. that help properly accentuate the size and scope of what it would be like to be up/out there, as well as how big this film really is. Director Ridley Scott shot the film in 3-D and serves up a few hints to the beautiful technology at play, though there is still a grittiness to it all. This is not friendly, bright and shiny unexplored territory; it's dark, dangerous, deep space. And then there are the scenes at the end of the trailer that look to take place on another planet, in another galaxy. There is dry, dusty terrain and ancient-looking symbols, a towering horseshoe-shaped totem of some sort, that looks to be either crumbling to the ground, or it is moving of its own accord, beginning a small war between the natives and the humans who've discovered them.

The New Ripley(s)
It's hard to talk about Ridley Scott and an "Alien"-esque movie without thinking about Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, one of the most bad-ass protagonists in film history. There's no replacing Ripley, but Scott has enlisted two very capable ladies to carry the torch: Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron. From what the trailer shows, both women will be fighting for their lives, but Rapace seems to be the most Ripley-esque, particularly in one shot where she is hanging upside down, being held by someone or something. The resemblance is uncanny. And let's not forget about the rest of the cast, of whom we get only brief glimpses: Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Guy Pearce and Rafe Spall.

That Ridley Scott Touch
The trailer is cold, calculated and just too cool. Just like Scott has said himself, if "Prometheus" isn't an "Alien" prequel, the two films definitely share the same DNA — not to mention a few "Blade Runner"-esque elements thrown in for good measure. And as is the case with most of Scott's films, the effects are far more practical than CG. The world of "Prometheus" is set in a distant future, but not too distant. It's big, bold and, very likely, terrifying.

The Alien(s)
As much as we might have hoped to see some big, bad aliens in this trailer, all we get are hints of an unidentified, menacing force out there. In one brief scene, the team happens upon an area full of small, perfectly arranged casings that could be artifacts or alien eggs, we don't know. But we do see one of the humans' helmets enveloped by a mysterious gas, followed by a loud, painful scream. There is a quick shot of the head of something being examined in a lab, what looks like it might be an alien ship of some sort hovering over dusty terrain, followed by brief shots of human suffering at the hands of something we can't quite make out. Yet.

"Prometheus" hits theaters June 8, 2012.
